We all know somebody that is chronically ill, that is, somebody who has been sick for a long period of time. Their cancer might have returned after being in remission, they may have a condition that cannot be cured.(ie.-diabetes mellitus, Crohn's disease, obsessive-compulsive disorder). If you are such a patient, you are at wits end dealing with your chronic condition for you are frustrated that you are constantly sick and not like “normal” people. What do you do? Do you just accept the fact that with time your current health status will improve if you continue on the path that you are on? Are you just going to wait around for a new wonder drug or state of the art procedure that may help? Many professionals at this stage will recommend counseling, support groups to help cope with your chronic illness due to what happens to the chronically ill. Namely, patients that are sick for long periods of time quite often are stressed out, have poor sleep quality, cannot work all of which may lead to depression.

Often, if you are chronically ill you recognize that you are not improving in your battle with the illness despite having all the appropriate medical treatment, family/friend support, exercising to your tolerance level-most people just accept their “lot in life”. That is, this is as healthy as I am going to get. Do you really have to have this opinion of yourself? Many people who are chronically sick not only function normally but eventually beat their chronic illness. Did you ever wonder who these patients are and who were their treating physicians? Did it ever cross your mind how come there are patients who were able to beat their chronic condition so that they were able to carry on with their life like they did before they were diagnosed?
